Nile River

Let me tell you about one of the most fascinating features you will see in Africa, the Nile River.

I have been hearing stories about this so I want you to stay with me over the months as I collect some of these stories.

Let me start by giving you some of the hard facts about the river.
As you can see from the map above, there are three parts to the Nile.
  • First; the longest is the White Nile which starts somewhere in the Great Lakes area of East Africa.

The Blue Nile on the other hand, starts in a place called Lake Tuna in Ethiopia.

The two meet near Khartoum in Sudan to form the  Red Nile which crosses into Egypt via the Sahara Desert and flows into the Mediterranean Sea. There are smaller tributaries.

  • The length of the river is estimated to be 4 132 miles (6 650 km).

It draws its water from a basin of 1 312 747 square miles (3 400 000 sq km) and get this, when it reaches the Mediterranean Sea, it is flowing at an average of 2 830 cubic meters (99 941 cubic feet) a second! That's a lot of water!

  • The river touches ten countries:

DRC,
Rwanda,
Burundi,
Tanzania,
Uganda,
Kenya,
Eritrea,
Ethiopia,
Sudan and
Egypt.

Okay, a lot of information to absorb for today. See you next month!

A footbag is a small bean bag that you kick up in the air with your feet. You can also use other parts of your body except your hands and arms. It is like soccer but with a smaller ball. You can play it anywhere!. When I play with my friends we kick the footbag to each other and try not to let it hit the ground. It's a lot of fun! Try it with your friends and email me (simba@dawnafrica.org) to let me know how many times you kicked it to each other without it touching the ground!
